What does shooting "flat" really mean? How do I achieve it with my camera? (Sony NEX VG10)

Main Post:

I have been experimenting lately with learning color correction and grading, and I keep reading about how shooting "flat" increases the dynamic range of the camera, allowing more visual information into the actual video file, and then allowing greater control in post.

However, while I definitely can see the difference between unedited video shot flat and shot with the camera's natural contrast settings, I don't really know what "flat" actually means, nor how to achieve it with the camera I currently own - a Sony NEX VG10. Can anyone help me in my education?

Thank you in advance for taking the time.

Top Comment: Higher end video cameras such as Canon's C range, Sony's FS cameras, RED and ARRI cameras have a "log" setting. It's low contrast, high dynamic range and flat colours make it a solid base for colour grading afterwards. The image is said to be "flat" as it has little colour or texture to it. The idea being that from this point, you can do the most with it in post. If you used more contrast or colour in-camera, it limits your choices in the edit.

Can we record video in flat profile..?

Main Post:

I have seen Youtube videos of people shooting with cinema 4K app to get the flat profile on LG G4. Is there anyway to get that flat profile on LG G6..? My main concern is to get rid of the over sharpening mobile cameras produce.. Shooting in flat/log gives a softer and far better output at least to my eyes..

Definitely not with the stock app but you can download an app (I forgot it's name) that does this

PlugIn to unwrap VR/360 video into Flat/2D?

Main Post:

I've got some VR footage that I need to turn into flatscreen stuff.

I've got a Win7 64bit system with Adobe CC.

My first attempt was getting the Fusion Studio stuff for GoPro cameras, but the files are wrapped in a .EXE that seems to be fussy about my computer not being Win10 or above. It won't install the plugin files, which is absurd and infuriating.

Does anyone have a working solution?

I don't love that video of you flat basing your way into a jump or onto a box.

Main Post:

Hey yall. Glad you're enjoying the season and getting into some snowboarding. Love seeing vids of yall working on turns and linking turns and trying to carve. BUT I don't love or even like the vids I'm seeing of obviously new riders in the park trying to do jumps or hit boxes or rails. When I see you trying to send it while it's clear you don't have your fundamentals --like basic edge control-- mastered it makes me sad. It doesn't look good. And it's dangerous. When I see somebody ride onto something with no edges engaged I cringe.

About 15 years ago a dude I worked with who was super athletic but still pretty new to riding totally fucked himself trying to hit a 3 foot jump he had no business on. He wrecked his spine. He went from playing college soccer to being in a hospital bed for a couple of months and then having to learn how to walk again. He walks with a limp now. He's in constant pain. He's never gonna be back to normal.

Snowboarding is awesome. It doesn't have to be dangerous if you ride what's in your skill level. Don't let how easy accomplished park riders make it look fool you. Even a small feature can mess you up forever.

I agree and have wanted to write something similar. Yeah! Park is cool but ruining your body is not. Most of these people are years away from riding park. Park is extremely dangerous and you should be a great rider going both ways. I’m 43 and still ride park. I can hit large line and I have metal in 3 places on my body. Be safe out there and continue to ride for a long time.
